Hanrine Foundation is supporting Desert Wave Records
28 October 2026
Music is one of the clearest ways knowledge moves between generations, and in the Pilbara that work is happening year-round through Desert Wave Records.
The Hanrine Foundation is supporting Desert Wave Records, an Aboriginal-led music organisation based in Port Hedland, to deliver its arts programs across the region. Desert Wave Records is the organisation delivering this work on the ground, and our involvement helps make that delivery steadier and more consistent.
Their approach is built for the long term rather than one-off visits. Youth music workshops and mentoring, Elder-led recording projects that document language and song, artist development, and paid roles for Aboriginal artists as tutors, facilitators and mentors. The work reaches places including Warralong, Strelley, Yandeyarra, Newman, Punmu and Parnngurr, alongside their studio base in Port Hedland.
That work is being recognised well beyond the region. Billy-Jo Shoveller of Desert Wave Records has been nominated at the 2026 ARIA Awards for Best Use of an Australian Recording in an Advertisement, for Tourism Western Australia’s Walking On A Dream campaign. Congratulations to Billy-Jo and everyone involved.
We are grateful to the team at Desert Wave Records for the trust they hold in the places they operate, and for the chance to contribute to something already delivering real outcomes.
