Message regarding Dawn Fraser
I’ve enjoyed the immense privilege of sitting with Dawn at many swimming events, both in Australia and overseas, and my respect and love for her has grown over the years.
Dawn is so devoted to swimming and the swimmers, that I worry she extends herself too far. For instance, at the recent Paris Olympics, Dawn (in her 80s) came with me to the swimming every night. Long walks involved, but watching her face, you could see her true devotion for the swimmers, including but not only her goddaughter Lani.
Yes Dawn is a national icon, winning many medals and awards, but in my view her dedication and contribution have not been recognised nearly enough.
Dawn is a genuine patriot who loves this country. We share similar concerns for it too.
Dawn, wishing you a good recovery dear friend. There’s many bottles of Aussie red we’ve yet to enjoy together! And many swimmers to yell for! I love waving our flag with you. And our precious time together, thank you warmly.
Dawn Fraser’s daughter has told how her “fighter” mother came to suffer a serious fall at her Queensland home after being admitted to intensive care.
The 87-year-old Olympic swimming legend broke four ribs and her hip in a fall at her house in Noosa last Wednesday.
She was admitted to intensive care, with her family at the time telling 9News they thought they were going to lose her.
Fraser has now been discharged from intensive care and remains in hospital recovering.
9News was told she’s looking forward to returning home to begin her rehabilitation.
