WA mining billionaire Gina Rinehart has called on the incoming Labor government to escalate efforts to bolster Australia’s northern defences, including shifting vital naval services from Fremantle to the Pilbara, reports the West Australian.

Australia’s richest person also wants “war drones” and sea mines deployed in the North West, saying national security should be the “first responsibility” of Anthony Albanese’s new government.

Ousted prime minister Scott Morrison had pledged in April to develop a $4.3 billion dry docking facility at Henderson while also announcing plans to build two new patrol boats in WA to sustain hundreds of local shipbuilding jobs.
