Billionaire philanthropist Gina Rinehart AO has funded a major refurbishment project at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.

Through the Rinehart Medical Foundation, the 71-year-old has funded Queensland’s first premium inpatient hospital suites with the transformation of 21 inpatient rooms at the hospital.

The refurbished eighth floor includes six premium suites offering a range of hotel-style comforts, including interconnecting private family lounges, and extra comfortable Japanese hair-washing units.

The project also includes a 78sqm principal suite, featuring its own balcony, patient bedroom, lounge, dining area and kitchen, as well as a dedicated station for nurses and carers.

Patients will have access to one-to-one personalised nursing care, as well as a room service menu created by chef Luke Mangan during their hospital stay.

Ms Rinehart said the upgrades set a new standard for patient care in Australia.

“These new patient premium rooms and suites help to bring to Brisbane what is already offered overseas,” Ms Rinehart said.

“I’m especially pleased with the extra filtered air and water for these facilities, making available unparalleled care for Queensland patients.

“Whether a patient is recovering from spinal surgery or breast cancer, or other medical problems, these new premium rooms and suites are designed to give comfort and dignity during some of life’s most difficult times.

The new suites were officially opened this week.
